Suzette's final days

Please be in prayer for Suzette and her family today.  She is not expected to make it through the day.  Please pray for peace and for the suffering to end.  Please pray that her family catches a glimpse of her faith as she goes to meet her Lord.
Her ministry to me and countless others is a priceless gift.
Updates will come as I receive them.

Suzette's new home!

What a huge blessing both to Suzette and to AWAKENHAITI!  When many come together giving, loving, serving, big things happen!

Suzette has blessed so many people over the last 2 1/2 years and it was an honor to turn that around for her.  She has been such a testament of faith and trust in Christ through adversity, sickness, poverty, and struggle to so many.

From a broken-down shelter to a solid, secure home in just a few short weeks...
Thank you to so many who gave financially, gave time, or prayers!  Suzette has been blessed with a new home and an outdoor kitchen providing much needed protection!  Finances were raised mostly by team members or those supporting them and a few weeks ago we asked for additional donations to assure the covered kitchen and final touches could be complete.  An additional $2,370 came in.    AWAKENHAITI' s project fund with the additional funds and the two teams' project money, we were able to complete this beautiful new home for Suzette.

She is so happy!  She loves her new home and the security it provides!  She thanks God for all of you who were part of it in any way!  Please continue to pray for Suzette as she battles with cancer taking over her body and as she so desires to walk closely with God through it.  Please also be in prayer for her family, that they would also realize the faith she has.

THANK YOU!

Team August I Day 3

Wednesday, the team was in Canaan spending their day in the medical building.  While some helped with some finishing touches on the building, Melinda and Junior saw and treated dental patients.  This continues to be a huge need in Canaan and we are blessed to have Junior ministering to the people!

The heat continues to be intense.  Please continue praying for the team.
Thursday will be spent beginning the moving process to the new guest house!

Thank you Mike and Allison!

Mike and Allison Orfanos served on teams 3 different times in the last few years.  They returned to Pennsylvania with a love for the Haitian people and a desire to be more involved with the ministry AWAKENHAITI is doing.
Mike and Allison are full-time teachers allowing them the opportunity to serve in Haiti for an extended period of time during their summer break.  They arrived in Haiti in June to quickly learn the ropes of helping to run teams so they could take over much of the responsibility from Deb as she returned to the U.S.  Mike also began learning some construction skills while Allison immediately took on running the medical clinic.  It was quite a lot of information to take in over a very short period of time.
They did a tremendous job and were a great help to Jeff in running three teams over a six week period.  They loved on the Haitian people including the children at Good Samaritan homes.
Mike and Allison have returned to Pennsylvania and will return to their teaching jobs in just a few weeks.
AWAKENHAITI wishes to extend a BIG thank you for your sacrifice, commitment, and service to the ministry and the people we minister to.  We wish you the best in the year to come and we pray for you as you transition back to your home, routine, and jobs!

THANK YOU!

Team August I Day 2

The team had a good day in Canaan today!  They worked framing Suzette's outdoor kitchen and painted her home.  What a blessing!

It is extremely HOT day and night in Haiti right now.  Please continue to pray for the team for good health and safety as they work in conditions they are not used to.

They are looking forward to another great day in Canaan tomorrow.

Team August I Day 1

Today the team attended church early.  They then toured the Port-au-Prince area.  This gives people a better understanding of some of the economic levels, housing, and businesses in and around the city.  It's always eye opening to experience first hand the vastness of the poverty level.
The team then spent the afternoon visiting with the Good Samaritan kids.  Word is, Resinette was practicing her skills doing a pedicure on Jeff's feet.
Tomorrow will be a day spent in Canaan.  Please pray for safety on the roads and work site and for God to use each person for a specific purpose tomorrow.

Arrival of Team August I

Team August I has arrived at the guest house safely.  We apologize for not posting sooner, communication/internet can sometimes make things difficult.  Family members, please check here or the AWAKENHAITI facebook page for daily updates and pictures but also know that if nothing goes up on any given day, it is due to internet issues.  We will contact you directly if there is reason to do so.

The team is excited for the week ahead!  Sunday will be filled with church, a tour around Port-au-Prince, and some time with the Good Samaritan kids!  There will be a lot of learning and blessing tomorrow.
We ask for your prayers for good health, safety, and for God to reveal all he has in store for the week for each person!

Thursday: Team July II

Today Team Manor had an amazing day in Canaan. In the medical clinic 32 patients were seen! The medical team even had a couple of hours to spend at Suzette’s house in the afternoon. God’s presence was definitely felt today as Suzette walked out of her shelter and into her new house. As she sat on her front porch praising God, the team prayed over her and the new home. It was an exciting and emotional day for the team.

Please join us in praying for Suzette physically and spiritually as well as for her new home to be a beacon of faith and God’s love throughout Canaan.

Tomorrow the team will be going on a hike, to the street market, and the pool.  The team will have plenty of time to reflect on their week and how God is working in and through them.

Wednesday: Team July II

Today Team Manor continued construction on Suzette’s home in Canaan. The team worked hard and was able to finish the gravel landscaping, the exterior walls, and half of the metal roof. This afternoon many of the team members went inside Suzette’s current home to visit and pray with her.

In the medical clinic Julie continued treating patients as other team members helped with registration, assessing patients’ vitals, and preparing prescriptions in the pharmacy.

Tomorrow is our last day in Canaan. We will have our final day of clinic, spend time with the kids, work on Suzette’s home, and by the end of the day move her in! Please pray for Suzette's physical strength tomorrow, and also for wisdom and courage for all team members to act on every opportunity that God presents.

Tuesday: Team July II

Team Manor had an awesome day in Canaan doing the kids program in addition to lots of work on Suzette’s house. The whole team participated in the kids program David and Goliath skit. Then they split the kids into groups and played games, created play-doh sculptures, and decorated popsicle stick crosses. We were blessed with over 100 kids today! After the kids program the team continued work at Suzette’s spreading gravel landscape, putting up the walls, and starting the roof. Team members were also able to spend time with Suzette and her family. She was feeling fairly well today and enjoyed visiting. She is very thankful for how the team is blessing her and her family through their work this week.

Please pray for a good night of rest after this busy day so that everyone will be strengthened for the day ahead! We will be returning to Canaan to continue the medical clinic and work on Suzette’s home.

Monday: Team July II

Today the Manor team headed to Canaan for a day of medical clinic, painting, and building Suzette’s home.  In the medical clinic our P.A. Julie had a busy day, helping 18 patients receive needed medical care.  Other team members helped with registration, triage, and the pharmacy.  The rest of the team members were involved with painting the professional building and framing the exterior walls of Suzette’s home.  While a lot of work was done today, many team members were blessed with time spent playing and getting to know the people in the community.

Tomorrow Team Manor will be heading back out to Canaan to run a kids program for grades 1-6 and also continue construction on Suzette’s home. Please pray for each team member to feel God’s presence throughout the day.

Team July II

Team July II had a great first full day in Haiti. After a much needed night of rest the team woke up and went to church, followed by a tour of downtown Port-Au-Prince. Later in the afternoon the team visited the Good Samaritan girls’ home. The team had a lot of fun dancing, playing dodge ball, and getting their hair braided.

Tonight the team learned some more specifics about the construction and medical clinic that will be going on tomorrow. We are ready for a great week and for what God has in store!

Please be praying that each team member will have the courage to step out of comfort zones and say “yes” to God’s promptings throughout the week.

We hope to upload pictures of the team as soon as the internet allows us.

Welcome Team July II

Team July II has arrived safely at the AWAKENHAITI guesthouse!  They will be spending the afternoon and evening unpacking, getting settled and learning a little about Haiti and what their week will look like close up.

The team will be spending some time this week with the Good Samaritan children and they will spend four days in Canaan doing a children’s program, running medical clinics, and building Suzette’s house. We are expecting it to be a great week!

We are very excited about the week ahead and all that God will do in and through this team!  Please be in prayer for the team for good health, safety, and for God to show each person something more about Himself as they serve.

Join the Journey...Suzette

Many of you have either met Suzette, have heard some of her story, or have been reading about her on the blogs.  We have talked about the countless people she has blessed in some way and that has continued even through my last visit with her before returning to the U.S.
For about a year now, one of Suzette’s prayer requests has been for better housing. Her roof sounds as though it will blow off with the winds of Canaan.  Water comes in many places along the walls and runs down and into her home every time it rains.  A few months ago, I noticed part of the floor caving in.   Now there is a hole through the floor.
Suzette has been such a huge blessing to AWAKENHAITI, we now want to turn around and bless her with a more secure home!  With funds raised by Team July II and Team August I, Jeff and his Haitian crew will began the stone/concrete foundation this week!   The two teams will be helping to build the house from the foundation.
We would love for you to join us in blessing Suzette!   Beyond the funds the two teams have raised, we need an additional $4,000.  we would love for you to join us in reaching this goal to complete the house and a covered outdoor kitchen.

There are two things you can do to be part of this:

1)  Make a financial donation to AWAKENHAITI by August 1st

     a. checks can be made payable to AWAKENHAITI please note “Suzette” in the
memo line and mail to :
              P.O. Box 951
              Carlisle, PA 17013
      b. online at:

2)   Card shower:  if you are making a donation and would like to send a note to
Suzette letting her know how she blessed you, that you are praying for her, or
other thoughts, please mail by August 1st to:

           AWAKENHAITI
           P.O. BOX 951
           Carlisle, PA 17013

AWAKENHAITI is so excited to provide this blessing for Suzette and we thank you for your prayers, your encouragement, and for Joining the journey!

Team Crossroads: Day 5

Today Team Crossroads returned to Canaan where they continued medical and dental care, various construction projects, and building relationships with the people from Canaan.  The medical clinic was busy and the nurses spent time listening to patients concerns and educating them on preventative care.  Without a large construction project this week, the Crossroads Team contributed significantly to completing some of the finishing tasks on the medical clinic and building tables and desks for the church and schools in Bethany Village and the new guesthouse.

Tomorrow will be a day of reflection, relaxation, and fellowship.  Some of the team members will be getting up early to hike up a few waterfalls.  In the afternoon the team will head to the market and pool.

Crossroads: Day 4

Today the team spent the morning at the guesthouse painting and assembling tables for the new guesthouse and desks for the school in Canaan. The team was thankful for a slow-paced morning where they could spend time having conversations with one another and reflecting on the week.

After lunch we headed over to the Good Samaritan girls home where we performed physicals, played games, and made jewelry. It was a great time for everyone to get to know the girls and have some fun with them. Today was truly a relational day and we were blessed with the time we got to spend with one another and with the kids.

Tomorrow we plan to go to Canaan for another day of medical clinic, construction, and spending time with the people there.

Crossroads: Day 3

Today team Crossroads returned to Canaan. In the medical and dental clinic, team members helped out in registration, triage, exam rooms, pharmacy, and helping Junior in the dental room. Today each patient was sent home with a bag of soap, washcloths, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss, which the team brought down and assembled. The patients were very thankful to receive these. Other team members were busy assembling the new school desks for the Bethanie School of Canaan. And of course there was some time for playing with the kids. Since the day got cut a bit short in order to make it back to the guesthouse before the rain came, the team had some time to hang out and relax. We’re thankful that the storm headed in a different direction. Depending on the conditions of the roads tomorrow, we plan to return to Canaan for another day of construction projects and medical and dental clinics.

Crossroads: Day 2

The team started their day running a kids program in Canaan.  They enjoyed singing, drawing, and playing with the kindergarten kids.  The whole team got into their roles as they acted out Noah’s Ark, which the kids found extremely funny!  In the afternoon, the team helped polyurethane the new school benches so that they can be ready for assembly tomorrow.

Tomorrow we will be heading back out to Canaan where the team will be involved in construction projects and medical and dental clinics.

Possible Storm

Please be advised.  We here at AWAKENHAITI are very aware of the possible Tropical Storm that is headed towards Haiti.  Myself and our in-country staff will always proceed on the side of caution when making decisions that directly effects the welfare of our guest here in Haiti.  Rest assured that our guesthouse is extremely secure.  Please pray the storm to diminish and for those in Haiti that are still living in less secured structures.

Thank you,

Jeff Denlinger - Director of Operations - Haiti

Crossroads Day 1

Team July 1: Day 1
The team started off their week painting at the Cazeau's house. AWAKENHaiti is blessed to partner with the Cazeau family and thanks them for the sacrifices they make for the Good Samaritan Homes.

Some team members were busy performing physicals for the Good Samaritan kids. The team spent the afternoon at the girls home drawing with sidewalk chalk and playing soccer. Everyone enjoyed their afternoon getting to know the kids.

Tomorrow we will be heading out to Canaan for our kids program.

They are here

The team is here safe and sound.  Travels went very smoothly and we are all looking forward to a great week.  They are all pretty tired and are looking forward to a nice dinner here at the guesthouse.  Tomorrow we will head to the Good Samaritan Girls home and the Cazeau's home  for some painting and physicals.

Team June II Days 4 & 5

The last day in Canaan was very busy in the clinic, our waiting area was already full!  Great job nurses in getting through so many patients, for taking time with them and doing your best to work with them!  Thank you to the team members who filled in other areas of the clinic, running registration, triage, helping in exam rooms, helping in pharmacy and the dental room.  We couldn't have done it without all of you!
The exterior of the professional building got a coat of paint and several others worked on cutting wood that our next team will then use to make school benches.  The building is looking great!  almost done!

Yesterday, the team enjoyed a relaxing day at the pool taking in some Caribbean sun.  Last evening, the team got to be part of a farewell party for the Denlinger family and for Sandra as her adoption is now complete and she is ready to go home!  What a blessing!  The children sang, danced and read some very touching words!

Today, a small group hiked a waterfall.  We will spend the afternoon with the Good Samaritan children playing and maybe some more dancing!

Good bye Sandra, we will miss you!

Team June II Day 3

More painting and sawing and hanging trim today in Canaan on the buildings.  Many more patients seen in the medical and dental clinic!
Deb took our two nurses to visit Suzette today.  We so appreciate the love and care they took for her today.  If you haven't read about Suzette in the past, please to the Denlinger family blog to read Some of Suzette's story.  The latest blog post is on Suzette and there are many other bits and pieces of her story in other blog posts under the archive posts to the right side of the blog page.
Suzette has been a living testimony of faith to many people!

One of the funnest parts of the day was the trip to the Good Samaritan girls home.  This team has three of the children's sponsors on it.  One of which got to meet their sponsor girl for the first time!  There was a soccer game, bracelet making, card game, good conversation and lots of fun going on all at the same time!
Alan and Leslie meeting their sponsor child, Marie-Ange for the first time!

Tracy and her sponsor girl, Lovely!

Team June II Day 2

Today, more construction work and painting was done in Canaan.  We almost doubled the number of patients we saw from yesterday.  We treated many kids with ear and chest infections, something is going around.  Junior and his awesome assistants also did some dental procedures.  Several of the team members had time to hang out with some of the community kids this afternoon.  They had a blast playing soccer, singing, and giving piggy back rides.  Aside from the work, we were very blessed today by the time this team spent with the people of Canaan!

We look forward to another day tomorrow similar to today, only better!

Please continue to pray for safety, good health, and for us to see HIM in and through all we do.

Team June II Day 1

Team June II had a great day in Canaan today.  There were a few different projects gong on in the buildings:  painting inside the small section of the medical building, wiring in the professional building, and cutting and painting trim boards.  The medical clinic was also busy with patients as the team worked in registration, triage, exam rooms, pharmacy, and dental assisting!
It’s a joy to serve the Haitian people of Canaan.  We learn from their resilience and are blessed by their appreciation.

Please pray for safety as we travel and work and for continued good health.  We will be praying for family members in PA.

*Please go to the AWAKENHAITI facebook page as we are experiencing some internet issues, making it difficult to upload pictures here.
