Founded in 1999 by Max and Margarette Cazeau, the Good Samaritan Orphanage in Port au Prince, Haiti, was home to twenty-two girls were orphaned, abandoned, abused, or living in extreme poverty. The Cazeau’s were also ministering to several boys and their families living in the community.
In 2008, a relationship began between the Cazeau’s and what is now AWAKENHAITI’s current leadership. Child sponsorships were established in order to assist the Cazeau’s in providing schooling and more opportunity for better nutrition for the children.
The earthquake on January 12, 2010 heavily damaged the orphanage leaving the girls sleeping outside for eight months and in greater need of assistance.
During this time, a group from Pennsylvania were moving forward with plans that were already underway to build a house in Carlisle, PA (theHouse4Haiti.com) as a fundraiser for providing a new home for the girls in the Good Samaritan Orphanage. Land was secured and construction began in the spring of 2010.
In August 2010, a home was rented for the boys that were already part of the Cazeau’s outreach. This was the beginning of the Good Samaritan Boys Orphanage.
In December, 2010, the girls moved into the home that would be purchased with funds raised from theHouse4Haiti. This purchase was finalized in December 2011.
The Good Samaritan Girls Orphanage is now home to twenty-five girls and the Good Samaritan Boys Orphanage is now home to seven boys. As the children of the Good Samaritan Homes grow and mature, we are focused on providing ways to help them bond as a family and to attain the self‐sufficiency that is necessary for a successful transition into adult life. We are working to establish post‐secondary schooling and/or professional training opportunities and small business start‐up programs to help break Haiti’s pervasive cycle of poverty.
The outreach of Good Samaritan expands beyond the orphanage into the city of Port-au-Prince, assisting others in need. In order to better reflect this, the ministry was named Good Samaritan Ministries in 2009. Good Samaritan Ministries is a foundation on which we will continue build and expand AWAKENHAITI
