Good Samaritan Relief

Today, Haiti is on day two of “getting back to normal”; businesses, markets, public transportation are beginning to open. Schools are scheduled to reopen on Monday. All of this is following protests, riots, road blockades, etc. since February 7. In addition to shut down, currency in Haiti is struggling. When AWAKENHAITI first began in Haiti, $1USD = 40 Haitian Gourdes. Now, $1USD = 87 Gourdes. In addition, there is limited availability for food, water, and fuel and costs have skyrocketed for what is available. Even though things are starting to move again, it may take weeks for supplies to get back to normal even if things remain peaceful. People are still very aware that the situation could become more difficult again if the government doesn’t begin making changes.
As for Good Samaritan, it has become very difficult to keep enough supplies, food and water on hand especially with the kids being off school so long. AWAKENHAITI makes a monthly donation to Good Samaritan to assist with school and living expenses and Max & Margarette make a personal donation to cover the remainder. Max’s business had been shut down since protests began making it even more difficult to afford the rising costs.
The transition students are struggling to stretch their monthly scholarship money for the purchase of food, water, travel, and living expenses.
While AWAKENHAITI is an organization focused on activities that have a significant and sustainable impact, there are times where we have stepped in to provide relief and immediate aide.
AWAKENHAITI desires to be sure each child/student has what they need each day so we feel this is a time to step in with relief. We plan to make an extra donation for the next 3 months in addition to our monthly contribution to the homes and to each transition student in order to supplement rising inflation and decreasing value in the Haitian Gourde. After 3 months, we will reevaluate needs.
Here’s where you come in: Would you please consider helping us with this relief? Our Good Samaritan Relief goal is $3,500 by April 1st.
If you are able to contribute financially, please visit the giving page on our website http://www.awakenhaiti.org/donate-now.html and make a note “relief” or mail a check to AWAKENHAITI P.O. Box 951 Carlisle, PA 17013 (note “relief” in the memo)
We also invite you to stand with us in prayer over Haiti for peace and resolution. We ask you to pray Max & Margarette, for each student in the Good Samaritan homes and for our transition students as they face these difficulties. We also ask you to pray for wisdom in the coming weeks as we prepare to send a team to Haiti in April. Safety is our first priority. We also desire to be diligent with resources and helpful where we are serving versus more of a hindrance for the Haitians we are working with.
Thank You!!
